FCS Diversity and Inclusion - PROPOSED RULE - MARCH 2011


Dear Mr. Van Meter,

As an environmental and food system planner in Colorado, I'm very glad to see that the FCS is considering integrating local and regional food into its work.  This is an extremely worthwhile goal, and, I think, an increasingly profitable one on many fronts.

I'm particularly hoping that you will commit to adding local and regional food producers to the FCS board, and create a plan to conduct outreach to regional and local food producers.  In addition, I'm looking to the FCS to offer staff development across the full range of FCS employees to strengthen their understanding of how best they can serve local and regional food systems and those that work within them.

I believe that the above actions, and other similar ones, would act to expand local and regional food systems dramatically, creating many new jobs both in Colorado and elsewhere in the country.  It would also be a strong step toward the establishment of a much more sustainable food system, which would in turn benefit all of us in multiple ways.  I hope that you will move ahead on these and other supportive steps as quickly as the process allows.
