Dear Mr. Van Meter,
I think it is wonderful and imperative that the FCS board reach out to include small food producers that cater to their local economy and food system be included in the FCS loan portfolio.
It is my belief that the small farm may be the salvation of the farming system and local economies in this country. In my area, farm land is sitting vacant and the next generation does not want to be a part of farming as it is right now. the small farmer cannot compete with the mega farms in that venue. rather we have seen new farmers producing less milk, grains, and vegetables but getting a bigger bang for their buck by selling locally. they are also in a position to enjoy their families and their community more as this farm scale actually gives them some free time.
It is also better for the local economies as those dollars remain in the community longer.
Please reach out to these farmers by training your staff to work with them and to find ways to include them in your lending system in a bigger way.
